The Ventura Film Festival originated in 2004 and has displayed hundreds of movies, usually over 200 films each summer, and has garnered interest from the worldwide filmmaking community. Notable moments have included showcasing renowned filmmaker Dylan O'Neil, the inaugural world champion surfers Peter "PT" Townend as well as Ian Cairns, 4x world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA combatant the celebrated Fabio Leopoldo, and the golden anniversary celebration of West Side Story, which included hosting the complete Academy Award winning ensemble of West Side Story, including Oscar recipient/Golden Globe winner George Chakiris along with Golden Globe winner/Oscar-nominated Russ Tamblyn. The founding executive director of the Ventura Film Festival was selected to take part, together with many of Hollywood's biggest stars, in the half-century commemoration of West Side Story and Hollywood's iconic footprint/handprint website ceremony celebrating Academy Award recipients Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, and legendary actor Golden Globe winner Russ Tamblyn at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. This gathering also operated as the official BluRay release by Fox and MGM of West Side Story, which is commonly viewed by critics and fans as the greatest musical of all time. This notable recognition and engagement illustrates the festival's considerable reach and esteemed status within the Hollywood community.
